Why teens & students should start doing Pilates

If you want to start your fitness journey, but you aren’t sure where or how to start, keep reading...

Pilates isn’t just for middle-aged women, it's for everyone. Regardless of your experience level, age, or gender, Pilates offers exercises tailored to your needs. It adapts to you, not the other way around.

There's a misconception that Pilates is "boring" or "ineffective." If you think this, chances are you haven't tried it properly. Let me change your mind.

I practice Pilates almost daily, it's my main workout and I'm hooked. Despite trying various workouts, I always find myself coming back to Pilates. But that wasn't always the case. In my earlier teen years, I associated Pilates with something only my mom and her friends did. To be honest, I didn't really know what it was then.

A few years ago, I broke my elbow and underwent surgery. Recovery wasn’t easy, and I was told to try Pilates as physiotherapy. At first, I struggled with even the simplest movements and thought it wasn't for me. But months later, I gave it another shot by joining classes and following online videos at home. Soon, I noticed improvements in my elbow and my overall strength. Looking back, I wish I'd discovered Pilates earlier. Now, I realize how much it could’ve enhanced my lifestyle in my school years.

I like to look at Pilates as a tool that enhances your overall lifestyle, so here’s my list of reasons why you should give it a shot as a teen/student:

Better Posture: You know that feeling after sitting in class for hours with your back all hunched over, or having to carry a heavy bag of books? It wrecks your posture, which can lead to back pain. Pilates strengthens core muscles and increases body awareness, helping you sit and stand tall with proper alignment throughout the day. When you train yourself to be with proper posture automatically, you're subconsciously working your core to support yourself.

Boosted Concentration: Pilates requires focus and awareness, which can sharpen your concentration, helping you perform better in school or any task you put your energy into.

Stress Relief: I know, school and homework can be overwhelming, and our bodies hold onto stress. Pilates is like a reset button for your body and mind. Use it as your outlet to unwind.

Energy Booster: Feeling drained? Pilates focuses on proper breathing, improving blood circulation and oxygen flow, leaving you feeling energized and refreshed.

Time Management: If you struggle with balancing school and life, Pilates is perfect for you. You can get an effective workout in just 15 minutes, even in your bedroom. 15 minutes will always be better than zero, It's all about consistency. If you can make more time, habit stack the 2 by attending a class and socializing with others. Bring your friends along!

Cost-Effective: No gym? No problem. With Pilates, there are options for everyone. If you can't afford a gym membership or physical classes, you can easily do Pilates at home with minimal space. There are many affordable online platforms and classes. All you need is yourself and a mat. If you want to take it up a notch, add in some equipment; ankle weights, resistance bands, small hand weights…

Overall, Pilates is more than just a workout; it benefits your physical, mental, and emotional well-being, helping you thrive in all aspects of life.
